In this book, Durig presents a full-blown theory of consciousness. By engaging contemplation of the possibility of two brain hemispheres operating as two brains interacting with one another and aware of one another, he claims that it is our brains existing in a System of Interactive Reflexivity (SIR), perpetually aware of the world and each other’s perception of the world, which is the cause of consciousness.

The essence of the book is relayed in extensive and beautifully detailed illustrations
In 1992, Dr. Durig earned a PhD in social psychology from the sociology department at Indiana University where he received NIMH-funded pre-doctoral and post-doctoral fellowships. He then taught at the university level until deciding to leave academics in 1999. His first book, Autism and the Crisis of Meaning, was published in 1996, and his second book, How To Understand Autism – The Easy Way was published in 2005. He has been a self-employed business plan writer since 2006, and he has written 2,000+ plans.
Durig has a passion for theory and an ability to render the most difficult concepts in plain language. The accomplishment of this book is not just the first strong theory of consciousness, but the first presentation of high level theory construction in consciousness that anyone with the desire to read it can understand – anyone.
Alexander Durig's vision of the human brain and of the origin of consciousness is fascinating and quite compelling, and it changes the way we think about self-awareness. I love the cover! Lots of personality and nice graphical setup, both outside and inside.
Tommaso DorigoI am very impressed with Closer To Consciousness. God lives in our consciousness.
Mark SeayAlexander Durig welcomes interaction with readers and he invites you to correspond with him, ask questions, and give feedback.
For many years understanding consciousness has been the Holy Grail of science. It’s been said that the greatest challenge before science is to explain how we become aware of ourselves as creatures moving through a 3D world of time and space with self-awareness. And no one has been able to do it – until now.
